I just starting watching Good Times on TV Land. What happened to the father, John Amos? Was his character supposed to have died? Or did they get a divorce or what? Thanks!

He must have wanted to much money. I remember watching the show and then he supposedly died but I don't remember how and then the dynamics of the show changed because they had to struggle even more to make ends meat. I think that John Amos was only a few years older than Jimmy Walker. Jimmy Walker I think was in his 30's when that show was on the air.

A lot of people who watched GOOD TIMES when they were younger (like me!) seem to recall Florida keeping her cool after James died. Then in one scene when she's alone she drops a bowl and it breaks and she has a meltdown and screams "Damn...damn.....damn!"

One of them...cant remember if it was the mother or the father in the show....didnt like the way Jay Jay's charactor was bufoonish and cartoonish and spouting silly catchphrases. They felt the direwction of Jay Jay's charactor was cheapening the seriousness of the show and thats why they left. Cant recall if it was the mom charactor or the dad charactor though.

...Just quickly glanced on the IMDB pages for John Amos and Esther Rolle and it said that HE left because of "fan mail" he got from black people complaining about the way the show portrayed them and SHE left because of Jay Jay's cartoonish ways. However, after a short absense from the show she came back after producers offered to mature the Jay Jay charactor.

It also said that John Amos was 18 years younger than Esther Rolle ....which is funny because I always remember me and my older sister watching the show and saying that "James" was too hot for "Florida"! (we never knew he was so much younger than her)

When the Florida charactor came back on the show she had a new husband, right? Or was he just a boyfriend? I dont think I ever watched the later episodes. I think when the Dad died I left too!

I think James died in a car crash or in a work related accident. All I remember is Forida getting a telegram telling her of his death.

In one of the last episodes I watched, Florida was supposed to be getting engaged. So I assume she later married him. I don't care for the last season, either. I think it was better when they were a family, before the daughter got married and what not.
