I happen to love Neil Diamond...on the way home tonight we were listening to the oldies station...I heard some great songs I love...like These Eyes-The Guess Who, and Make it With You-Bread, and Natural Woman- Aretha Franklin, now those are songs that are fun to sing along to...but this song came on, and me and my mom remember how much my Dad loved this song:

Neil Diamond - Solitary Man Lyrics
Melinda was mine
'Til the time
That I found her
Holding Jim
Loving Him
Then Sue came along
Loved me strong
That's what I thought
Me and Sue
But that died too

Don't know that I will
But until I can find me
The girl who'll stay
And won't play games behind me
I'll be what I am
A solitary man
Solitary man

I've had it to here
Bein' where
Love's a small word
Part-time thing
Paper ring

I know it's been done
Havin' one
Girl who'll love me
Right or wrong
Weak or strong

Don't know that I will
But until I can find me
The girl who'll stay
And won't play games behind me
I'll be what I am
A solitary man
Solitary man

It made me remind myself that I need to find the JazzSinger on DVD...I use to really like that movie, and I haven't seen it forever. I loved the soundtrack.

Neil Diamond is a guilty pleasure of mine. My mother listened to him a lot when I was growing up and back then I thought he was pretty uncool. Now that I'm grown up I love his stuff.

Hmm.. If we are honest with ourselves, I think there are very few people who really hate him.
I think Sam put it well. Listening to Neil Diamond is sort of a guilty pleasure.
I always liked 'Love On The Rocks'.

I actually like Johnny Cash's version of that song better, but then again I love every Johnny Cash song.

Neil Diamond writes TONS of songs that are re-recorded by anything from country, rock, and hard rock bands.

Some people may not like him, but you cannot deny his ability to write a great song.

That part is so true about song writing...my mom was saying that her and my Dad use to have this song on an 8-track, and they loved every single song on it. There aren't any groups out there now that I have actually bought a CD of someone new...that I loved every single song...that never happens. I never even find 1 song any more.

Songs use to have depth and meaning and were up beat...we were listening to the song

"Downtown"...it was on the oldies channel...where she sings...forget all your troubles, for get all your cares and go down town...things are much brighter...

It is like...wow...if everyone could just go downtown and forget all their problems...it's like what planet would we be on? But, I actually do remember when I was a kid...going downtown, and going shopping and hanging with my friends, going for a piece of pizza on Saturday afternoon, hanging at the arcade, looking for 45 records, buying candy at G.C. Murphy's, maybe going to buy a new shirt. I loved going downtown at Xmas. Most places don't have a down town any more, and if they do it is pretty scary.

I love the oldies stations...they played the song Lightnin is Striking by Lou Christie...I use to love that song...we knew the words to every song they were singing ...and those songs were from my mom's generation...but I love that music better than anything out there today...You can't even compare the 2.

I was thinking they should have played the background music to We Coming to America...last night at the Fireworks display...that is really cool music..I like that song a bunch too.

I love

I am I said
Sweet Caroline
Crackling Rosie
Holly Holy
Girl you'll Be A Woman Soon
Cherry, Cherry
Kentucky Woman
Shilo
Song Sung Blue

I prefer his pre-1975 stuff. That stuff is classic and has really stood the test of time very well.

Sam is correct; Neil Diamond was much more enjoyable in his earlier days. Well, at least, before his "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" soundtrack came out.

After that, Neil got all mushy! Yuck! [Frown]

It is interesting that many 90's and 2k groups seem to look up to him, though! Didn't someone do a remake of Neil's "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" song that appeared on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack?

Do any of you like the movie The Jazz Singer? I watched it several times on HBO in the 80's.

Actually the Neil Diamond one was a remake of a remake I think.

Yeah...it is a remake...I think the first one had Al Jolsen in it.

I really did like the Jazz Singer, I have been wanting to get it. I looked it up on Ebay, it is hard to find, but it was a good movie.

He is sort of a guilty pleasure isn't he? When I saw a Red Sox game last year, the eventual World Series Champs played Sweet Caroline during the 7th inning, and sort of adopted it as their official song. It was a cool moment seeing a stadium full of people singing that. Also wasn't there a character with a serious Neil Diamond fetish in Saving Silverman?
