#1 as far as movies are Concerned. A complete ranking would be interesting if you are that schooled in 80s movies. Myself would put 1984 #1.

Those ones, plus I can think of Private School, Return of the Jedi, Cheech and Chong's Still Smokin', I'm sure there's more. Great TV, music and video games from that year, too.

I agree with all that has been said - I will try to make a case for 1985 as it always seems to be the most mentioned year when more recent movies flash back to the 80's. Also, 1985 spawned a lot of good movies obviously.

The Breakfast Club Weird Science European Vacation The Goonies Back to the Future Teen Wolf Gotcha! Witness Rocky IV Commando Pale Rider Mask - don't watch this movie with your mother. My mum went to pieces at the end. I have to admit though I had to try pretty hard to hold the tears in. Better Off Dead Explorers (The first half anyway) Real Genius After Hours St. Elmo's Fire Ladyhawke Runaway Train The Sure Thing Santa Claus: The Movie - loved this as a kid but checked it out recently and could not sit through it.
I would say that overall though 83-88 were the five best years of the 80's for good movie output (or is that 6 years, you know what I mean )
Now someone needs to make a case for 81 or 82.

I dunno man, I mean a lot of good movies came out in 87/88 - I think it did go rapidly downhill after that although 89 still had a few good movies too.

I think every year from the 80s was a great year for releases,especially the first half of the decade.
Great question terd but looking through at the yearly imdb film listings a near on Impossible one to answer!

Armour of God - Jackie in action and almost killed himself. Avenging Force - The best Dudikoff film. Big Trouble in Little China - Another Carpenter classic. Blue Velvet - Lynch in top form. F/X - Highly entertaining and intelligent thriller. Ferris Bueller´s Day Off - Another Hughes masterpiece. The Fly - This is how you do a remake. Highlander - Superstylish Mulcahy masterpiece. The Hitcher - C. Thomas and Hauer in a game that takes your breath away. Night of the Creeps - Fred Dekker is a genius. Platoon - Stone was still on fire. The Wraith - The cast, those Arizona roads and that hard rockin´ soundtrack.
Plus many, many more...

Just researched 1989 flicks.WOW! The top money maker, Batman, put me to sleep. Not a good movie year.

89 was not bad in my opinion. I never liked any of the Batman movies but I think there were a reasonable amount of good movies that came out in 89. Many of which I saw at the cinema

I loved 1984/1985- because I was 16 years old...and I was allowed to date then, so we always went to the movies on the weekend. First movie I saw on a date was Terror in the Aisles
So, I love that time for movies.

This is a great topic to discuss. I have always thought that 1984 has wrung supreme as far as movies and music go. As everyone has already mentioned above, a ton of popular movies and great songs that really helped to define the decade.

Dang it...I was just doing a scan of movies from each year in the early 80's...I just can't pick!! When I think "80's", the year most prominent for me is 1984....I love those four little numbers!
