I thought this was cool! Entertainment Weekly magazine listed the top 10 movies at the cinema for the weekend of Sept. 5th - 7th, 1986. The list contains several excellent films that we have discussed in the past.
So the question is:
If you could pick only one movie from the article to go back and watch at the theater for the first time.. which would you choose?
I would actually select Aliens .. back in 1986 it would have easily been "Top Gun", but Ronnie and others have given me a new appreciation for "Aliens" .. so that is my choice today.
What about everyone else?

Well Duh!...of course it's gonna have to be "Aliens"...I'd stick around to also see "The Fly" right after as a great double feature.

watched everyone of those movies and not a stinker amongst them,tell a lie i've just spotted karate kid 3 which i must say i've always found to be slightly disappointing but i'd still say it's not a complete stinker,overall a great top 10.
would be interesting if someone could post up the top 10 from this weekend just to see how much it pales in comparison!
so many great films to choose from but i'd have to go with back to school just for the fun of seeing it in a packed theatre!
saying that with a weekend boxoffice gross of only 1.4 million i don't know so much about it being a packed theatre, it sounds more to me like it would be just me and the missus!

you think your getting old johnny , i think my eyesight is going,i thought that read karate kid 3 ,there's me saying the only one on that list i thought was disapointing was karate kid 3 and it's not even on the list,it's part 2.

Think I'd have to go with Stand By Me....love this movie. Shamefully, I've yet to see any of the Alien movies , so can't judge that one. I love the Karate Kid so much as well....so seeing the sequel when I was younger was a big deal.
Forgot to mention earlier that about 3 weeks ago, our local drive-in played Top Gun....a fundraiser for a local charity. I'm not a huge fan of the movie, but couldn't pass up the opportunity as I still appeciate it's contribution to the 80's and it still holds great memories for me.....

i like to have a theater around where i live that shows old movies like these.
the back to the future trilogy would be one of my top picks to see on the big screen

it's worth tracking down nothing in common atomik,tom hanks and jackie gleason are superb in it,i found it to be a very likeable comedy drama.
it features some funny scenes, especially with hector elizondo who plays hanks bald headed boss who keeps wearing all these funny toupees!
the scene where he jumps in the pool and his wig comes off was hilarious. great film.

Aliens, all the way for me! I got to see it last year, on the big screen and it was super awesome. I would choose it again, of course, and I would also like to see Back To School.

Well, it may not have been on the actual list, but you sure were right about part 3 though.. it kinda sucked !
Maybe part 2 looks (and sounds) a little too eighties in retrospect, but part 3 doesn't really have a lot going for it, i think. Maybe Ralph got too old by that time, maybe Pat was getting tired of being Miyagi, or maybe the soon-to-follow new decade was the reason it didn't really have the same feel to it as the previous parts..

Oh my god, just seeing this list & imagining if it were real gave me the biggest rush!
I never get excited by movie listings these days. I don't even look. Sad but true! But what a lineup!
Picture it being 1986 & having all those options on a Friday or Saturday night! I'd lose my mind.
I'd probably go with Stand By Me or About Last Night. I've never seen Ruthless People or Aliens so maybe one of those too! Heck, like Paul said, at 1986 prices, I'd be in the theater the whole weekend!

Once upon a time, more specifically 1986, it actually was real. I know this first hand since I saw every one of the top 10 films, except "The Karate Kid, Part II," in theatres--and those are some truly wonderful films. (I would probably choose to see "The Fly" or "Stand by Me" first.) This week's current top 10, including drivel like "Apollo 18" and "Shark Night 3-D," pales by comparison and shows just how far we've sunk in 25 years.

No contest for me, The Fly would be my first choice. It is far superior to the 1958 original in every way possible, especially in terms of how the transformation is changed from a simple head-and-hand swap to a gradual transformation.
My next pick after that would be The Karate Kid, Part II. I thought this was a good follow-up to the original. Don't get me started on Part III, though. There was really no reason for that one to be made other than the success of its predecessors.
You're right, Crash. Looking at this list and then looking at the movies that are in the top 10 box office rankings this week shows just how far movies have fallen. There aren't too many post-1989 movies I've seen that I actually liked, so that should tell you how I feel about current films.
