Anyone else into this?

Aside from the BTTF's, this might be just about my alltime favorite movie. Of course, I became a Weird Al fan around 1992 (the man is still one of my heroes, but that's another story), so that was when I discovered it.

It pretty much bombed at the box office in '89, but has gotten a sort of cult status in subsequent years. Long story short, he plays a lovable, imaginative guy who can't hold down a job, so he and his best friend take over a TV station his uncle wins the rights to. It's very lighthearted and wacky, just like his music translated to the TV world.

Devolution here,

You now know someone that saw this in the movies. I was one of 5 people in the theater.

Great movie.

Right on.

I've only been in a theatre emptier than that one time (back in '94, my dad and I saw a Hulk Hogan comedy called Mr. Nanny and we were there with, like one other person!).

But, anyway, from your memory, did it get a good reception? Some of the situations seemed impossible not to laugh with. Plus, you just had to love George, Stanley, Bob and Terri as the quintessential "good guys".

Devolution here,

I am bias, I have liked weird al since the first time I saw him on Dance Fever singing "I Love Rocky Road" I was like 6. I was hooked. The movie to me was something that wasn't debateable, I was seeing it no matter what.

My dad was a huge weird al fan, owning all his records and seeing him in concert. We went to see this when it came out, and we thought it was an instant classics. There are so many funny parts, and you can watch it over and over again and catch something you may have missed.

Great movie!

I did the page on this movie for the Rewind. It's a personal favorite.

My favorite character is Kevin McCarthy's R.J Fletcher. He has so many great lines. My favorite line is:

"People like that oughta be put to sleep".

That is ruthless. Oh, and the parody of the "Rambo" movies was funny as well.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

If you haven't seen it yet, go for it.

It's a shame he died before the filming was finished because they were going to have the animals get their revenge on him.

"SPATULA CITY!!!" Loved this movie! I like "smart" dumb comedies, like this one, Spaceballs, The Three Amigos, etc. I don't care for just dumb comedies, like anything Will Ferrel does.

I can't say I've ever heard of this movie, but considering all your reviews and the fact that my daughter is a huge fan of Weird Al, I've decided to buy it.

Thanks for recommending.

Does anyone know if this is the one where Michael Richards asks "Who wants to drink from the fire hose?!"...and then blasts some poor kid across the room with a jet of water?

I do remember spatula city. It's funny because every couple years or so, I will be in housewares of like a Bergners or Sears and hear some middle age guy shopping with his wife and he will pick up a spatula and say "Spatula City!" usually followed with a look of derision by his significant other. Haven't seen this one in years...Will look for it again. Good thread...glad you brought this one up!

Yep, this is the movie - it's fantastically funny.

Here's a youtube clip of the firehose scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXc5ltzKq3Y

I think it is one of those films that you have to watch in your youth and in the films general release time. Me and my friend would watch it all the time and quote away like there's no tomorrow. But I think that if I watched it for the first time today, I would probably hate it.

Been a Weird Al fan ever since I was old enough to crawl. Was listening to his records even before this movie came about, so of course I begged my folks to take me to see it. Loved it then but have watched so many times I'm afraid it doesn't hold the same spark it once did for me. Still am a big Weird Al fan nonetheless though.

My favorite scene is the quick 10 second sight gag with the old blind guy on the bench trying to solve a Rubiks Cube. That gag has me still LMAO to this day every time.

Here it is:
