Ok there is something about pulling out my vhs's that just brings me right back to the 80's.
So i'm gonna watch Coming to America because that post the other day made me think I need to watch it.......and what is the first preview on my vhs????
it's a old Pepsi commercial about how they brought Pespi to the "New" Soviet Union....complete with teenagers in a Soviet rock group.....then a Black Rain preview........then a preview for The Best of Eddie Murphy on SNL videocassette.
Previews and their cheesy graphics just remind me of being a kid in the 80's getting the popcorn ready....rewinding the vhs....getting ready for the show........
anyone else a VHS nerd like me? it's gonna be hard upgrading them all
plus seriously the artwork couldn't be beat!!!

I had some time to kill today, so I popped in my old "Wayne's World" VHS tape to watch today. And what's the first thing I see..An old "Stay in School and stay off drugs" promo with Arsenio hall & Magic Johnson complete with cheesy basketball gear and the backwards baseball cap...the whole she-bang.

I probably never would've seen Can't Buy Me Love if it weren't for the preview for it on the Adventures in Babysitting VHS.

Guys those are great and I know what you mean Veronica! especially the smaller video releases have good previews for movies I haven't seen and it's a good way to see them.

Too be honest.. I seldom watch any VHS.. just a few favs that I have been unable to update. But I did watch "Aloha Summer" recently and they had a preview for "License To Drive" on VHS.. what was really funny was that about of the preview scenes were not in the movie. They did put some of them in the deleted scenes section of the DVD though..

There's nothing like watching an old VHS and seeing the first moment you became 'aware' of a movie that would end up meaning the world to you: 'Summer Rental' VHS, where (I think) I first saw the trailer for 'Explorers'.
You gots ta love old video trailers.

Yeah, I love the vhs previews too. It was the best way to find new movies to watch before the internet took over the world. Who knows how long before I would've seen The Dirt Bike Kid if it wasn't a preview on The Legend Of Billie Jean vhs? I don't even want to think about it.

This is EXACTLY how I feel about VHS.
Nothing beats the experience of watching an old tape, just like I still prefer vinyl over CD.. any time. Like Logan said, it brings you back to that very first moment and no crisp clear HD/3D/Blu-ray DVD can ever replace that.
Those previews are indeed a big part of the VHS-'charm'.

Some years ago I bought a Betamax machine and a couple of boxes of tapes cheap, looking through them I found almost 300 UK tv ads from the 80s, so I digitised them in and put them on a CD. Made a bit of money from it and then a couple of years after I put it out as a torrent.
Interestingly quite a few advertising agencies bought copies of the CD and one time I got an email asking to phone back as they wanted them fast, so I did and they sent someone out the next day (Saturday) to collect the discs in person and then drove to France with them..!
The torrent might still be out there but other people are definitely selling the disc on eBay, I thought about doing that but didn't want to risk losing my account from selling the discs there.
And I think I inadvertantly helped bring back Wispa because the Wispa ad I captured was put on YouTube and used in the campaign: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zj_gXb7TEkE
Also I think I helped Toshiba because a couple of years ago they did a remake of the classic "'ello Tosh, gotta Toshiba?" advert, of which one of the only original 80s ads out there on the internet came from my tapes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9aL3G-HI0s

As for film previews, most of the films I have on VHS are ex-rental which means they have film trailers at the beginning, I've wanted to find the time to go through them all and capture the trailers in because a lot of them are for films that didn't hit mainstream but are so very 80s.
From watching those trailers I increased my VHS collection as I was actively hunting those films down, which led to more trailers and more 'wants'.

It was a real trip searching through those betamax tapes for the first time, really it was, for a time I felt like I was a kid again because I hadn't seen those adverts in 15-20 years!

totally!! I get it...thats exactly why I like my vhs's so much.I have been cutting my vhs covers and folding them in my dvd case when I upgrade because I just can't let them go.

Nothing like an 80s VHS trailer or UPCOMING ATTRACTIONS as they were sometimes called: Deep voice trailer man, exposition, the long narrative preview. Legendary.
The Wizard no doubt remembers the Flake ad...maybe this should go in Muffy's Steamy Scences thread!
Looking back, I remember how the room went silent everytime this commerical was on, at the time I just thought it was because everyone REALLY liked Flake, days of innocence they were!

The old previews are a novelty, but I must be honest when I say some of the movies had some of the worst previews ever. I mean come on. The Dirt Bike Kid Preview, terrible. The movie is bad too.

It's a milk chocolate 'stick', made of crumbly ruffled chocolate. It's nice (simple though). Kraft has just bought Cadbury's which I consider a heinous crime. They wanted an 'in' to the Indian markets. Cadbury's are a superb chocolate manufacturer. Makes me weep.

You know every VHS i've watched since I started this thread has had NO previews like I jinxed them!!!!
On the candy note......I tried some of the Cadbury bars when I was in the uk and I swear your chocolate tastes different! It was those Cadbury Aero bars everywhere.

Aero is so-so. Cadbury's chocolate is more creamy than US chocolate. US chocolate tastes a bit drier, as if it's been left on a shelf for a couple of months. Try some 'Galaxy' Muff, you'll never go back!
(PS: 'Maltesers' and 'Whoppers' may look the same, but they most certainly are not! Maltesers rule the world! Same with 'Smarties' and 'M & Ms'!)

i can remember watching some uk cbs/fox releases and it had the most awesome line up of trailers ever for the likes of - nightmare on elm street 4,fright night 2,bad dreams,the hidden,jacks back etc. i was like,watching it,yep! watching that one as well,and watching that one,yep! and that one!

There's a user over on YouTube named ThePreviewsGuyReturn who's uploaded tons of VHS previews from the '80s and'90s. While most of the videos contain the usual production logos, FBI warnings, and movie trailers, there's a few that have TV commercials and PSAs. It's a nice nostalgia trip to go through the old VHS preview reels, even though we now have DVDs and Blu-Rays.
While it's on my mind, one thing that I think made videotapes better than DVDs were the covers. That's what made going to the old video stores so exciting. I'm fortunate to have at least seen the end of that era and can remember seeing a lot of memorable VHS covers for different movies in the mom and pop stores. I think we need a separate thread for memorable video covers from back in the day. Who's with me?
