Has anyone seen Sid & Nancy featuring Chloe Webb and Gary Oldman? What year was it made/released? I'm not sure if it was 80's or 90's??? In any event, who saw it, liked it etc. I thought Gary Oldman played the 'role of a lifetime' in this one. He's just brilliant. This is the first movie I noticed of his and I've been a fan ever since. Chloe Webb was exceptional too. What do you guys think?

I have Sid & Nancy. I love punk rock!!!
It was made in 1986. I agree Gary Oldman did a wonderful job in that movie. The only thing is that some things in the movie were not totally accurate but it was still good and I've watched it several times.

Akita,
Good sources I have about Sid & Nancy are a couple great books. One is "And I don't Want to live This Life" by Deborah Spungen, Nancy's Mom.
Really interesting, tells nancy's whole life story. In reading it , you'll see that some parts of the movie dealing with her visits with family were way off. The book offers a lot of insight about what she really was like.
The other book is "England's Dreaming", all about all the punk rock groups of the 70s. Has some info on the fact that no one really knows exactly what happened the night Nancy died, plus good info on her and Sid, and all punk stuff.
I've got a lot of info on the Spungen Family as I've contacted the Anti Violence group Deborah Spungen started in PA, where her family is from.
Let me know if you have any other specific questions.
My favorite 80s movies are Sid & Nancy,Dream A Little Dream, Stand By Me & Flight of the Navigator:). Like any of those? By chance, do you have Navigator? My sister's vcr ruined my copy and it's out of print for now.
Let me know. Thanks!

Just noticed you're from Austrailia. That's so cool! By the way, if you don't know, PA is Pennsylvania. I'm from the United States.

If you like "old school" (or rather, real) punk rock, you might wanna check out these 80's gems:

(that is, if you haven't already)

Suburbia -Penelope Spheeris' film about alienated punks living in a suburban wasteland in southern califirnia...GREAT soundtrack/live appearances by T.S.O.L, The Vandals, and DI.

Decline of Western Civilization -Penelope Spheeris' documentary on the LA punk scene...live footage and interviews with such legends as; Fear, Black Flag, X, Circle Jerks, The Germs, and more.

Another State of Mind -Documentary following Social Distortion and Youth Brigade on their doomed 82' tour.

great stuff.

Oh yeah, and I really liked Sid and Nancy, with all of it's artistic liberties.

definitely worth picking up... (it's available on DVD) is The Filth and the Fury, the documentary on the rise and fall of the Sex Pistols.

there's some interesting film footage of the infamous couple and a great back story on them provided by Mr. Rotten.

Hey Megan, I'm afraid I can't help you out with the Navigator movie. I'm only just begining my 80's DVD collection. The only one I have is Tuff Turf! I would LOVE 'Suburbia'. Does anyone know if it's available on DVD? Now I know Sid & Nancy is on DVD I'll be searching for it. Thanks so much for those book titles. I'm a keen reader of biographies and the like. Yes, I have seen Stand By Me. I Loved it!! I think it's cool to be talking to you in PA. Gotta love the internet!
For DJ, I swear you and I have identical taste. I love all those movies and docos you mentioned. [Big Grin]

You're very welcome Akita!
I usually don't talk to people over the internet, except email, but it is really cool to find others who share your interests.
If anyone can help me find Navigator, please let me know. Thanks!
If anyone wants to email and talk anytime feel free!

Oh yeah, The Great Rock and Roll Swindle -I like it. Funny and odd little gem of a movie (with great music to boot)...poor Bambi, hehe.

Suburbia is available on DVD, I got it for $19.99 at Tower Records some time back. (it has an additional commentary track by Penelope Spheeris, which is very interesting)

Akita, you too have excellent taste in movies. [Big Grin]

I haven't picked up Sid and Nancy on DVD yet, although I've been meaning to. I used to have an old Beta copy that I played to death.

For Megan: I'll be on the look out for that movie for you. I too don't communicate with others over the net as I have been warned about the DEVO's that lurk in chat rooms. I must say though this site is an exception, just goes to show 80's fans are the best people on earth! I love and respect your country and hope you are all safe and well in these dark times.

For DJ: Thanks for your kind words. I know this sounds like a suck-up but it just seems every movie or music group you mention is right up my alley! So where do you reside when you are visiting from Pluto?????

Akita- Thanks for your nice comments. And for looking out for my movie.
I will be gone for a few days but will check back soon. It's nice to "meet" you!
And DJ-I'm glad to see someone who agrees that the real punk was from the 70s(and early 80s), not what is thought of as punk today.
Old School rocks!
Talk to you all soon!

Akita, it certainly isn't a suck-up if it's true. We just know what's good, that's all. It's always nice to come across others who share common interests, however it may happen.

Hehe, I've been spending the last couple months in Northern Virginia, just outside of Washington D.C. -Preparing for a documentary in May that will initially start here. The Cramps are touring then [Big Grin] and I'm gonna try my best to get them in it.

Megan, you obviously have wonderful tastes in both movies and music as well.

Yeah, isn't it horrible when so-called "punk rock" bands like Blink 182 say that one of their early influences are Green Day? (I wouldn't know if that actually occured, but I can certainly imagine it happening)

TRL "punk" -ugh.

I love The Damned. (random proclaimation)

Hey there,

There is also a great book out that follows the American tour of the sex pistols it's called "12 days on the road" It has some great insights to how the band interacted and really talks about Sid's drug habit.

On a side note, it is great to have this site where there are so many kindred spirts and not a bunch of people ready to take offense at someone else. Just a love of the 80's!!!!!

Thanks for creating this site. [Big Grin]

I hear ya DJ! The bands of today apparently think punk is something you 'dress up like', or something near to heavy metal or anything slightly 'grungy'. In my opinion, PUNK was/is something you were. It was actually quite a put-down in it's hey day. If you were 'called' a PUNK it certainly didn't mean what it means now. I really dislike the 'pretty-punk' as I call it, you know, certain bands that are slightly heavy, but not overly grungy. The are labelled PUNK. Sorry you just aren't gettin' it fellas! PS I too love The Damned. Suprise , suprise. [Razz]

For Nyx, that book you mentioned sounds like a fascinating read. I'll be on the look out for that one too. Thanks. [Smile]

i have the special edition dvd..great extras on it.

i like the movie, but the real story of Sid and Nancy is much more intriguing. after watching interviews, documentaries and reading several books, like the ones mentioned above, "And I Don't Want To Live This Life"..and a few others, going back and watching the movie, it comes across a bit corny ha.

but Chloe Webb was awesome as Nancy Spungen, Gary Oldman did good too, but Johnny Rotten was not a fan of the movie.

I own the Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.. what a trippy little movie, and i love The Filth and the Fury documentary on the Sex Pistols.. Johnny is awesome.

their last show they performed on their U.S. Tour, is great.. got myself a copy of the audio..and the part where they perform the last song, The Stooges' 'No Fun'.. the look on Rotten's face as he's singing "this is NO FUN..at all"..is priceless. and after that, it was over for them. the drama!

Lovers.. i have seen it on cable all month, and i have caught pieces of it everytime. i love the feel of the movie..they didn't do a great job with the music numbers, but the main focus was on the relationship of Sid and Nancy, anyway. [Smile]

I think Rotten always hated the 'myth' of 'Sid Vicious' that Sid tried to live up to - and ultimately killed him. He apparently had a really good sense of humour that was lost in the 'Vicious' persona. Sad.
