Sadly, a remake, not the original.

And given this bit of news, I fear for the effort.....

I've said it before, and I'll say it once again: I was never a fan of Red Dawn. The premise of the movie is really a great one, but the movie loses me after the first 20 - 25 minutes. I think so much more could be done with a premise as intriguing as the one suggested by Red Dawn, and, quite frankly, I always liked Toy Soldiers a lot better.

Given these opinons, I'm not apalled at the notion of a remake, given (IMHO) the disappoinment that the original film turned out to be. However, that's not to say that a remake would necessarily improve upon the original. Given the slew of putrid remakes that have been released over the last 5 years, I'm slightly dubious abobut this project as well.

I think the issue with Red Dawn was one of scope. The idea of the town being taken over as part of a larger plan was fine, but they tied it into world war 3 and had Europe be wiped out and half of America destroyed/occupied. It was too much. They should've kept the story limited to the takeover of the town as a trial run for something bigger, that 'the kids' manage to ruin.

That's why Toy Soldiers works so well; it has a nice, plausible scale to it. It reminds me of 'Taps'. Actually, it also reminds me of the 'Die Hard' movies.

I saw Red Dawn for the first time last year: pretty good movie with nice survivalist themes. The only way a remake would work IMO is if it were made independently with the narrative sophistication of V: For Vendetta meets the unremitting ultra violence of Battle Royale. As it stands, I agree, it doesn't sound too promising.

So Kash just watched this for the first time last year..........well I just saw it for the first time last night.

I'm not sure what I actually think this morning? I got so freaking confused..........is it because i'm a girl? haha

I loved that there were so many 80's stars in it........thing was in some scenes I couldn't tell which main male character it was? haha

I loved how it just started into the takeover......within the first 10 mins or so.

Funny that the special features on my dvd are to have a running tally of a death count? eekkk.

Anybody got any favorite parts? Everyone I know loooooooooooooves this movie......If i'd seen it as a kid would I understand it better??? hmmmmm
Help me out here people?

I really liked it though. [Big Grin]

"Red Dawn" had great cast and overall was an enjoyable flick. Always thought is was interesting that Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey were actually in this movie first...

Your confusion may be because you're a girl, but what does that have to do with Red Dawn?!

No, probably not. It always was a slightly messy John Milius right-wing piece of alternate future history nonsense (in an enjoyable way). The film really is as bonkers as it seems.

The movie is a more than a bit propagandistic, not very well balanced and has some boring moments, but it's beautifully crafted. The influences of Ford and Kurosawa are very obvious. It's a pleasure to watch these dark, postcard-like images.
