"Glendon Wasey is a fortune hunter looking for a fast track out of China.
Gloria Tatlock is a missionary nurse seeking the curing powers of opium for her patients.
Fate sets them on a hectic, exotic, and even romantic quest for stolen drugs.
But they are up against every thug and smuggler in Shangai." (IMDb)

Well, i wasn´t looking for a masterpiece and i didn´t get it but actually this wasn´t that bad at all.
Pretty decent adventure comedy. The plot is very silly at times but it didn´t bother me that much.

Sean Penn and Madonna did a decent job but what i liked most was the supporting cast:

Paul Freeman in a double role (Dr. René Belloq from Raiders of the Lost Ark)
Richard Griffiths and Philip Sayer, the Laurel and Hardy duo, always there when you don´t need ´em.
Clyde Kusatsu (Gimme an 'F', Volunteers) was very funny as Joe Go.
Kay Tong Lim (Off Limits) so evil and scary with his porcelain hands.
Sonserai Lee, very pretty as the China Doll.
And the icing on the cake, the legenday Victor Wong (Egg Shen from Big Trouble in Little China)

I liked the locations and the George Harrison penned theme tune was awesome.

George Harrison - Shanghai Surprise

Now let the bashing begin [Smile]

Another in the So Bad They're Good catagory. Still, as noted, the cast makes the best with what they have.

aTomiK, have you ever read the novel on which the film is based, Faraday's Flowers?

There is a review of it here on the Rewind as well.
