We went to Philadelphia for a 3 day trip and on our last day we visited "the ROCKY statue" and my husband , daughter and daughters best friend raced eachother up the "ROCKY steps" (he won). I told them I would rent ROCKY for them. I havent seen it since I was a kid anyway.
It got me to thinking, which ones are worth seeing? I think most people will say "See em all" and then some people will say "Just the first one" Hahaha

Of course, the original is considered the best "Rocky", but I've always been a fan of "Rocky II" for obvious reasons that I don't want to say since you haven't watched in awhile.
Watch Rocky 3 if you love Mr. T
Watch Rocky 4 if you love Russian Tea.. ok not really.. but alot of people enjoy Dolph Lundgren
Watch Rocky 5 only if you love The Next Karate Kid .. huh?
Okay.. just start with the original and go from there.

Yeah, the first one is super duper, so start there, but the rest are fun to watch as well. I imagine the kids will like them all. I also really enjoyed Rocky VI ("Rocky Balboa") that came out in 2006. If the kiddos watch and like the first one, maybe you could just do them in order after that.

Mamamiasweetpeaches, the first "Rocky" not to mention its sequel are the only good ones that are worth viewing.

I grew up with 3 and 4, so I like them the best! They have the 80's feel, the best music and the best training scenes!

i sorta have to agree with jay lee here for the pur 80s FEEEEEEEEEEEL which is why we are on here lets face it huh?? But heres my opinion which nobody really cares aboutt ill spend time (but ill spend time writing it anyway) LOL Rocky 1 Up against it (not corny and more realistic) Rocky 2 ( as above but a bit more corn) Rocky 3 ( Shows people not to be afraid of anythng or anyone - thus a great film) Rocky 4 (Showing we can overcome tasks which we view as impossible) Rocky 5 ( Life after death really) God bless all

Logan summed it up the best for me...exactly as he said III & IV are more stylized and therefore probably going to appeal to a younger set on a more visceral level (pop/rock anthems, jump cuts, the ubiquitos 80's montage ). I love these movies, but you sir are no Jack Kennedy!...wait! What?!
In all seriousness though, the original Rocky is truly a movie that every kid needs to watch at some point and every adult needs to remind themselves why it is a classic that stands out from a series and belongs more on a list of cinema classics than it really does a comparison to its highly enjoyable but truly inferior followers.
Rocky belongs on a list of movies to show your kids (age appropriate some 16+) with The Godfather, Taxi Driver, The Wizard of Oz, Psycho, King Kong, Ice Pirates, etc. It is not only a classic, but also an American classic that has a special resonance here and will give you that lump in the throat moment throughout. It can be and I think truly was meant to be watched only alone without the sequels and in that frame of mind, is truly extraordinary story telling and film making.

Living about 90 miles from Philadelphia, I can safely say the original is practically deitified in the city today, that Philadelphians see it as perfect expression of their consciousness and personality. I won't disagree, not when it hits all the right notes anyway and as mentioned above is a landmark in cinema that more than deserved its Oscar.
