I've been considering purchasing some movies I've never seen before...they all kind of seem to be in the same category...at least in my head...so, that being said, anybody have any feedback on the following:

Murphy's Romance
Crossing Delancey
Crimes of the Heart

I'm also open to suggestions...anything along the same lines...thanks guys [Smile] !

All mildly interesting... Lots of people liked James Garner and Sally Field in Murphy's Romance--and it has its moments--but Crossing Delancey is better because Peter Riegert and Amy Irving are more charming. Crimes of the Heart is meh.

I also own Crimes of the Heart dvd but like Crash said, it´s not so good.
Crossing Delancey is on my wanted list.

I guess Heartburn (1986) with Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep is a little too downbeat compared
to the other ones mentioned.
It's worth a look though, if you've never seen it before.

Hold on.. i'm gonna take a look in some old video magazines to see if i can come up with something.

I don't mind Heartburn, but it kind of gives off that whiff of the tremendous acting talents of Nicholson and Streep squandered at the service of a Lifetime Network screenplay. (Good creds behind the camera too--Mike Nichols directed, and Nora Ephron based the screenplay on her own marriage.) It has one absolutely priceless scene with Nicholson and Streep in bed together, watching the cheezy disembodied-head-in-a-glass-jar horror film "The Brain That Wouldn't Die." Nicholson is in rare form perfectly summarizing the plot for Streep, "Well, you see, there was this TERRIBLE accident..." He's hilarious, the rest of the film not so much.

Found a couple of titles. Basically i searched for adult-oriented, romance-themed movies.
Some may be more comedic than others, some may be more serious than others,
and some may be more famous than others.

- Heart Beat (1980) starring Nick Nolte and Sissy Spacek
- One From The Heart (1982) directed by Francis Ford Coppola
- Falling In Love (1984) starring Robert DeNiro and Meryl Streep
- The Buddy System (1984) starring Richard Dreyfuss and Susan Sarandon
- Fool For Love (1985) directed by Robert Altman, starring Sam Shepard and Kim Basinger
- The Purple Rose Of Cairo (1985) directed by Woody Allen, starring Mia Farrow and Jeff Daniels
- Children Of A Lesser God (1986) starring William Hurt
- Peggy Sue Got Married (1986) directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Kathleen Turner
- Full Moon In Blue Water (1988) starring Gene Hackman and Teri Garr
- Blaze (1989) starring Paul Newman
- A Touch Of Infidelity (1989) a.k.a. Cousins, starring Ted Danson and Isabella Rossellini

You guys rock! I have to say, of the three I mentioned, Crimes of the Heart was the one I was least interested in, therefore, I will purchase Murphy's Romance & Crossing Delancey based on your input!!

Ooh, Heartburn grabs my attention. I love Nicholson and Meryl Streep. Perhaps I can score a cheap copy!

Here's a few others that have me curious...

Seems Like Old Times with Chevy Chase & Goldie Hawn

Best Friends-Burt Reynolds & Goldie Hawn

Unfaithfully Yours-Dudley Moore & Armand Assante

Lovesick-Dudley Moore, which I've seen bits of but couldn't tell if I liked it or not...

These just seem like movies I want to bring out of the darkness...maybe there's some gems to be discovered...maybe not...

can't stand watching good ol' Burt.. ah well..

I'd definitely go for Best Friends though ! [Smile]

These are all pretty good, cute even. (Did I actually use that word? LOL) Lovesick is probably the weakest of the four. I think that Seems Like Old Times is the best. Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn had really great chemistry together in this and their earlier pairing, Foul Play.

>>Seems Like Old Times with Chevy Chase & Goldie Hawn

Neil Simon script! Not great, but good.

>>Unfaithfully Yours-Dudley Moore & Armand Assante

I have a massive soft spot for this film. It's a remake of a 40's (?) movie. Not perfect, but I really like it.

>>Lovesick-Dudley Moore, which I've seen bits of but couldn't tell if I liked it or not...

Another one I like. I think if you like Dudley Moore or '10' - you'll probably enjoy it. He also did the weepie 'Six Weeks' which is worth checking out.

I imagine you've probably seen some of what's on Johnny's list, but if you haven't seen 'Purple Rose of Cairo' or 'Peggy Sue Got Married' then do it right now! They're both fantasies as much as romance movies.

Oh boy, I'm sad to report that I watched Crossing Delancey & Murphy's Romance and didn't care for either...

Crossing Delancey was like a tedious Moonstruck. I much prefered Olympia Dukakis over Amy's "Bubbie." Ugh...too slow and Irving was so bland and uptight, I wanted to scream!

Murphy's Romance was just not what I imagined. It was too country. I didn't like where it was set, I thought what's his face was too old for her, there were long periods of scenes with just music that I didn't like & not even Corey Haim could save this...he was just there, no expression, blah.

Man, I'm almost afraid to check out some of the others but I'm bound to find one that I like.

Heartburn so far was the best to me...the next two I try will be Seems Like Old Times & Best Friends. Hmmm...

Seems like old times is a great movie, and as Crash said, the chemistry between Chase and Hawn is very evident, which adds to the comedic value. You won't be disappointed... [Wink]

That comment wasn't directed at your statement about Seems Like Old Times - it was a general statement about the other movies she listed (including SLOT) because she'd watched two of the more 'straight' romances. Movies like SLOT and Unfaithfully Yours have more comedy in them, so even if they aren't terrific movies, there's more to like.

Johnny I've not long added this to my blockbuster online rental list,It's one a few pacino movies I've never watched, plus I don't dislike michelle peiffer either.

Looking at the trailer some time back it looks a pretty decent watch and seems like one of the so called chick flicks I don't think I'd have much trouble sitting through.

If you want to see a 1980's-era "chick flick", I'll make things simple for you...

Any movie starring Meryl Streep
Any movie starring Whoopi Goldberg
Any movie starring Barbra Streisand
Any movie starring Sally Field
Any movie starring Cher
Almost any movie starring Dolly Parton
Any movie starring Goldie Hawn
Any movie starring Jane Fonda
Any movie starring Liza Minnelli
Any movie starring Lily Tomlin
Any movie starring Bette Davis
Any movie starring Bette Midler
Any movie starring Meg Ryan
Almost any movie starring Susan Sarandon
Just about any movie starring Debra Winger
Any movie written and/or directed by Nora Ephron

Any movie where two or more of the leading roles are played by women (example: "Steel Magnolias")

The point is: some women just can't help but making "chick-flick"-type movies! [Wink]

Sorry, but I am old enough to remember a time when old-school film studio producers would call these kind of movies as "women's pictures". [Cool]
