Okay finally got around to watching this and I regret to say I did not enjoy it. Val Kilmer was cute...and thats all the praise I can give.

I know, I know....this film has a HUGE fan base on here. Go ahead! Rip me apart like dobermans!

Sometimes I watch these 80s movies and wonder - had I actually watched them when I was 12 would I have enjoyed them? Because sometimes watching them as a "grown up" can be less than gratifying.

Nostalgia can add immensely to a movie watching experience! But there's a lot of older movies that I've just seen within the last five or ten years, that are now my favourites as well! If they have the feel, style and the vibe of that era, then I don't need personal nostalgic reasons to enjoy them!

You almost certainly would've enjoyed them much much more. There's a lot to be said for 'youth' when it comes to viewing movies. Some films stand up, some require a little more naivete to enjoy. A friend of mine recently viewed 'Goonies' for the first time after missing it when it came out (he would've been about 12/13 at the time). He thought it was well made, but found the film a little silly and dull (he said the journey to the ship was too short). He also found the kids annoying. To me, nostalgia wipes all of those things away, and I'm transported in time when I watch it. Nostalgia is a powerful thing!

That said...

Let Real Genius settle for a while. It stands up fairly well to repeated viewings. Try it again in a year or so, you might find you enjoy it more.

The popcorn ending set to "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is a classic!
