A group of small town kids get together on a rainy saturday afternoon for their last weekend together. Their families are being forced to move away due to rich land developers who plan to take their homes in order to level the area for a golf course. The kids discover a lost treasure map in the attic and decide to find the gold so that they can help their parents and stay together.

To find the treasure the kids have to translate the spanish map, follow twisting underground tunnels and get past booby traps. Worst of all they are being chased by the "Fratelli's" a family of criminals who want the treasure too.

I will never betray my Goon Dock friends,

We will stick together till the whole world ends.

Through heaven and hell and nuclear war,

Good pals like us will stick like tar.

In the city or the country or the forest or the boonies,

I am proudly declared a fellow

Goonie.

Cool Facts:

There is in fact a real legend of buried treasure near Astoria.

One Eye'd Willy's real name was William B. Pordobel

Michael Jackson and family were on set much of the time to watch filming. (that should scary ya, but he an Corey were friends back then.)

During the "Truffle Shuffle" scene, Jeff Cohen was embarassed and had to have the set cleared before doing it. He was also getting over the Chicken Pocks, which he didn't tell anyone for fear of being unable to do the film.

During the Walsh house kitchen scene, they did so many takes of Jeff Cohen eating whipped cream that it made him sick.

There is no attic in the Goonie house. The attic scene was shot at Warner Brothers in Burbank, Studio #20.

During the Attic scene, Sean Astin (Mikey) told the story of One Eyed Willy unscripted. Donner took him aside, told him the story and asked him to tell the story in his own words during shooting.

The photo of "Chester Copperpot" In the newspaper article is also used in the film "Shock Treatment" from 1981.

The Fratelli's hideout (restaurant) doesn't exist but was a set. The location of the set is actually 30 miles away from Astoria, at Cannon beach.

Data's 'sister' the little girl Brand steals the pink bike from is actually Jonathan Ke Quan's niece, Lisa.

Ke Quan (Data) spells out "s-h-i-t" during the bolder dropping scene because his mother wouldn't allow him to curse.

Many of the kids actual family members had short cameos at the end of the film parents played goonie parents.

Jeff Cohen does actually have a sister Eydie and an Uncle Max. Sister Eydie can be seen at the end of the film.

During the scene with Sloth picking up Chunk in the chair many people think Chunk says "You smell like fish heads." He's actually saying "phys ed.".

Jeff Cohen became Class President when he went to UC Berkeley, his winning slogan...."Chunk for President".

They put a tiny replica of R2D2 on the Inferno ship model which was used in the last scenes of the film.

The devices used to open the Walsh family gate and to lift anchor on the Inferno were created by Rube Goldburg and actually worked provided you can always scare an egg out of a chicken.

It took John Matuszak (Sloth) 4 hours each day to get into makeup. The mishappen eye was remote controlled. They had to count in order to get both John's and the remote controlled eye to blink at the same time. 1, 2, 3 blink.
John Matuszak was a defensive lineman for the Raiders.

Data's inventions all have names, including but not limited to..."Sticky Dart, Wings of Flight, Pinchers Of Peril, Bully Blinders, Slick Shoes, Intimidator, spy eyes and bully buster.

In Italian, "Fratelli" means 'siblings', so in a sense they were the brothers brothers.

The inscription on the bottom of the chest they break through reads the same as on the map. "Ye intruders beware...".

When the Goonies was made for Spanish audiences, they made Rosalita an Italian woman. Rosalita becomes "Rosanna".

There is a song on the soundtrack entitled "8 Arms To Hold You" by a band called "The Goon Squad." This song was entirely removed from the film because it was used during the cut scene involving the octopus. However, because the filmmakers were convinced the song could be a hit, it was pressed as a 12" dance single. As it was cut out of the film, it wasn't promoted at all and thus sold miserably. It is still one of the most collectable Goonie items to date.

The name "Rube G" can be seen painted on the contraption that opens the yard gate for Chunk near the beginning of the movie. This is in reference to Rube Goldberg, the Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist who drew whimsical machines that achieved simple results in difficult ways.
Mouths father owns a plumbing business called Mad Jacks Plumbing, you can see his truck with the logo on the side during the opening chase scene scene of the film.

Brand (Josh Brolin) is supposed to be Claustrophobic. You see hints of this through the film but it's never completely explained.

Do you like reading cool stuff like that about films? I know I do!

Nice big scoop of trivia. I was reading a book about the Raiders and Matuszak recently, wondered how it was getting into that Sloth outfit.

Riptide, thanks for finding this thread, because I never get tired of discussing the greatest kids adventure movie of all-time. There are rumors it will be released on Blu-ray in October and I'll be at the front of that line if it occurs. And yes I do consider myself a Goonie for life Isis.

A Goonie sequel with the original cast sounds interesting. I'm just not a fan of trying to recapture past glories because it seldom seems to work. But I'll reserve judgment until after I know more about it all. Thanks for the Brolin clip Muffster.

I watched that clip...he says that Meryl Streep is going to play Anne Ramsey's part...that would make her about 120 years old now.

They'll have to recast Sloth too since John Matuszak died in 1989, but I guess with all the makeup it shouldn't be too difficult.

See in my mind I'd rather them try something then nothing??? it doesn't change the original??? it's something new on it's own??
If it has the original director.....writers...actors.......could it be horrible.......i'm trying to be positive!!

I don't get the whole 120 year old thing?? Is it because she looks old??.........because I think she was only 59 when she died of throat cancer right after she won an oscar for Throw Mamma From the Train..........sad.

No it doesnt change the original, but it taints its legacy! If it sucks that is, and come on.......! Why can't they just leave well enough alone! even with the original director, actors etc. It could still blow the big one... look at Indy 4! a ****stain on an otherwise perfect adventure movie trilogy! Star Wars prequels, and basically anything SW related since Return of the Jedi was complete garbage. Don't kid yourself into thinking that any of this nouveau sequelitis syndrome has anything remotely to do with any form of artistic vision.... it's all about that green!

I don't wanna be stuck in the past, but I think Hollywood should treat old classic movies more like elder statesmen, and remember the old 'respect for your elders' creed. But thats never gonna happen, it is after all called the movie BUSINESS for a reason, so go ahead and make all your crappy sequels and remakes, just don't expect to be more than a sorry *** footnote in movie history when your done...!

RANT OVER....

Ok, rumors have been swirling about a US Blu-ray release of "The Goonies" to coincide with the comfirmed Japan release in October, but to this point no news. Well something is up, because when I was picking up "Risky Business" I notice a flyer about Blu-ray and right on the cover was the cover art to "The Goonies" with title 'New to Blu'. So maybe there is hope after all .

I may have mentioned it before, but even if so might as well again since we're going into deep trivia here--this film also provided the initial basis for Free Willy, as Keith A. Walker was intrigued by the film's oceanic setting and set about crafting the story after production here ended.
