I like gangster films but this one never appealed to me as much as others of the genre. I thought this one was a little too over the top. I do intend to watch it again sometime so maybe my opinion will change.

Devolution here,

This was one of the most overrated movies of all time. It has great parts, but for all that I heard about it for so many years, it doesn't hold the water that everyone says that it holds.

Not to offend those that love it, but I don't. Dog Day Afternoon is a better Pacino movie.

I also recommend:

Donnie Brasco
A Bronx Tale

Not quite the same as Scarface, but good Mob movies.

I really liked Scarface in the 80s but it's just OK for me know. Pacino has done a lot better work throughout his career IMHO. After Dog day afternoon he had some less than stellar movies. Scarface put him back 'out there'. Then he did a couple more bombs before coming back again in The Godfather part III. His career has followed this path right along until today... Having said that, I think is is one of the best actors in history. I think he makes poor choices... [Smile]

i really liked scarface, but it is defintely a movie that's overhyped, thanks to those terrible rap bands who think this is the greatest movie ever.

dog day is a great movie too, but he also did "...And Justice For All" and "Sea of Love" before the bomb that was GFIII. i liked GFIII but it was basically panned by everyone else. i even liked "Author! Author!". he also had a stellar run of good movies in the 90's.

Part of jdocster04's post:

Namely, "Revolution". In that one, he played an American in the early colonial days...with a Brooklyn accent! [Eek!]

Another bad choice he made was "Bobby Deerfield", a love story about a car race driver.

I like Pacino, but there was a time between "Dog Day Afternoon" and throughout most of the 80's up to the early-90's, when he really struggled far decent parts.

One notable (and suprising) exception would be his part as one of the villains in "**** Tracy"!

I have not seen the 80's "Scarface", but I'm amazed how this film has reached cult status. Today, I see hip-hop guys and rappers who wear clothes with the "Scarface" logo and imagery.

I love it but I do prefer the original 1932 version of Scarface.

The greatest gangster film for me though without doubt is Once Upon A Time In America.

I need to check out Goodfellas - big time what are peoples views on that movie? I really like ganster movies. I own all of the Godfather movies, but I really like Scarface tho. I think the movie is more popular now than it was when it was 1st out because of the ganster image behind rap artists these days. They idolise the imaage the movie portrays.

I like it though because it underlines just how greedy people can becaome and becaue of their greed it makes them vunerable. Plus the drugs make the charicter Tony very pyscotic.

"goodfellas" is the second best gangster film ever, behind both "godfathers i and ii".

also checkout "casino" and "king of new york" if you haven't seen those either.

"Goodfellas" is one of my alltime favorites. But it came out in the early-90's, so I think any discussion of that movie belongs in the 90's Movie folder. Just my opinion.

Yeah, I usually watch it over 2 nights. That's how I first seen it on TV years ago and with the special edition spreading the film out over 2 discs as well I just carried on that way. Doesn't spoil it for me. I'm so in the mood to watch this again now [Cool]

Casino is my second favourite behind Once Upon A Time In America. King Of New York is great too [Smile]

I don't think anyone's mentioned Carlito's Way yet, another goodun. I recently watched the prequel Carlito's Way: Rise to power, not bad, not great but not bad [Razz]
