I have had some discussions with Ali and Isis about why 80's films are more memorable than films from the 90's. paulshrimpton I think just summed it up in a post for my 80s film of the day #14.

BIG BUDGET DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN BETTER!! The 80s film totally focused more on storylines and character development and did not totally rely on visual effects as they obviously did in the 90s. I am afraid it did not get any better after we hit 2000 either. It seems they are always trying to make something bigger and better. Computers, Makeup and blowing things up. That is what I miss most about the 80s film. You could just sit and follow conversations instead of watching tons of chases and things blowing up. The exception that does not follow this rule because it was done effectively was "Die Hard". That was awesome for big budget.

that is totally true! the only good 90's movies came out in the early 90's, or just happened to be exceptions. i know right now, the cg animation and things are trying to look so real, but it just looks like a video game, and it really makes me sad that we have to depend on computers nowadays for our movies.

I agree so much on this. I hate watching something generated from a computer-it looks completely fake. Here's what I totally miss about movies, and someone tell me if they do to...I miss that there were real stunt people that actually took a risk with their life, to get a certain shot in a movie, today, nobody will even break a fingernail..I saw the previews for the new Tomb raider movie, that looks so totally fake and stupid, she didn't even smudge her lipstick doing that movie, and that bugs me. I want to see people really doing stuff, not fake! And these actors spend all this time working out, and making sure they have this perfect body- what for, it isn't gonna matter-they aren't doing anything to worry about, they aren't gonna get hurt. Maybe they might trip at the bank cashing their check, but that's about all that movies are about, a huge paycheck. Some actors maybe deserve money, cause people will watch a movie cause of their name, but all the big name movie stars, their movies all stink now too, and people go, hoping that they will be back to what they used to be, and leave disappointed-but they paid the price, so that's all movie makers care about.
The storylines -some of them-could actually be good, like I thought the idea and what I had heard about One Hour Photo, or even Wrong Turn, I thought they might have an ok story to them, if they did the movie right, but then they throw all this junk in there, that makes it totally unbelieveable. Like the Hulk- that was so awful, and wasn't even real..the story was so confusing, and they did that picture in picture thing with different scenes, it made my head spin, trying to follow it-I gave up. There has to be a real man out there that could have played The Hulk, and did it like the series, but brought it up to date in a different way, with effects. It was so fake looking. The last movie I have seen that I will watch over and over is Frequency-with Dennis Quaid- I love that movie. I thought in the beginning of the 90's, they might make some cool stuff, but it went all down hill. But I am glad that there are others who feel the same way, cause people I am friends with, they all watch the new stuff, and love it. I am always getting in to an arguement over a dumb new movie with someone.

I agree!!!
I mean, I absolutely love going to the cinema, it's so much better than watching movies at home (especially if your tv is this small thing like mine... [Razz] ), and I love the anticipation and excitement when the curtain opens etc... but man, there are hardly any movies worth going to, which I find really sad. And you're right about the special effects mania nowadays. You really wonder when they will stop needing actors for movies!
(I have to admit thought that I have to contradict myself there for one movie - the LOTR trilogy - I just love those!)

The one movie (apart from LOTR) I watched and absolutely loved in the last year was an Indian movie called "Monsoon Wedding". Did anyone see that? I think you'd like it too, Isis! It's really a feel-good fun movie.

I know, I miss going to the movies so much right now, I loved going around the holidays, it was so fun, you could go Xmas shopping, then go see a good movie at a matinee, and then go out to eat somewhere cool, and talk about the movie, that was fun. I remember when I would go to the movies and not be able to decide which movie to see, cause they were all good. Even the popcorn stinks at the movie theater near me. We used to go to the Drive-In every weekend, up until maybe 4 years ago, but even then, most of the movies stunk, it was just fun going to a Drive-In, I always wanted to buy it and play the old movies we all love, especailly around Halloween. That would be so awesome to see Prom Night and Halloween on the giant Drive In screen. Everyone is talking about The Cat in the Hat-you couldn't pay me to go sit through that one. And the reason people are talking about it, is because that's all there is. The movies I see previewed, from the preview-you can't even tell what the movie is suppose to be about, or remember the titles any more. I can't. I saw the preview for the Julia Roberts new movie, I can't remember the name of it, but she can look pretty hag looking without make up, but I am glad she will go without make up, because I think people need to know what people really look like. The coolest thing I ever saw was when Jamie Lee Curtis showed everyone what her body really looks like, and how long it takes them to make her look like what everyone else sees in the magazines. I think too many people are undergoing surgery to look like a person that doesn't even exist. I saw the tabolid out now in the check outs of the celebrities without make up on, I thought that was great, because then you know they are regular normal people.

Agree 100% with what's been said.

Difficult to guess when our treasured '80s standards will return, if ever. Personally, I reckon that cheesemeister Steven Spielberg has a lot to answer for. His Jurassic Park marked the year - 1993 - in which CG got too excessive, too detrimental, and way too convenient. From then on we've been subjected to increasingly bland, unimaginative movies brimming with cliched characters and naff scripts. Like isis9968 has alluded to, just what has happened to those awesome set-pieces and/or creature creations we used to have in movies like Aliens, The Fly, Dune etc etc?? Will we ever see their like again?? [Frown]

God it makes me wanna puke the way things are now.. [Mad] Thinking back, in the early '90s (up to around '92) there were still some decent movies being made which either didn't go completely OTT on CG or were interesting enough to make you overlook the fact: Total Recall, T2, and Lawnmower Man among others. If the producers/directors can get back to that 'level' of moviemaking, then popcorn cinema might actually have a future. As things stand at the mo, though, the next decade looks to be pretty bloody dull, folks.

(Me, a pessimist?? Never!!! [Wink] [Big Grin] )

I wouldn’t go as far to claim that ALL recent movies are bad, but there’s no doubt that they used to be a whole lot better in the 80’s.
What I ( personally) miss most in movies nowadays is a great soundtrack or a good use of music in general. To me that is almost just as important as the storyline...

OKay I have to agree with ISIS, but unfortunately we outnumber the majority of the population who crave the big cinema. I wish that I could try to check out some of the independent films of today since they obviously stay clear of big budget. The only independent film that I have come across that I love is Election. Now it has some 80s undertones just because of the clothing that they wear, especially reese witherspoon. I think that big studios are to scared to go back to the days where film making was the center because they think that all people want is to be wowed by special effects. Boy are they wrong.

Any of you guys seen Lost in Translation? A very good movie, Bill Murray is great in it. Plus the soundtrack is excellent. Good movies are still being made, but it's hard for them to get exposure with all the Super hollywood big budget flash special effects. Would you say movie fans now have a really short attention span compared to the 80's?
