Just read about a new independent film that will be set in 1985 that will start filming soon in Ocean City, Maryland.

The producers of a coming-of-age comedy about Ocean City are looking for authentic 1980s props and memorabilia, and they need your unused belongings or treasured collectibles.

"I want it to feel as authentic as possible," said writer and director Michael Tully. "I want to play it almost like a documentary from the '80s when it comes to the locations and the cars and even the outfits."

"Ping Pong Summer" tells the story of one boy's vacation experience in summer 1985. Filming begins Sept. 17 in Ocean City. The movie will be released next year.

Michael Gottwald, a producer on the film, said what they're specifically looking for are props to be handled by actors, and items that will be used as dressing. They want items that Ocean City locals would have had in 1985.

Filmmakers will work 10-12 hours a day until the start of filming, to hunt down as many items as possible.

Video games will be needed for key scenes in a rec center, so items like vintage pingpong tables and video games are of particular interest.

The script also calls for certain makes and models of cars to appear on film such as a red Iroc convertible, a white Volkswagen Cabriolet and a Maryland state trooper patrol car.

Casting is mostly complete. Adults will be played by Susan Sarandon, Amy Sedaris and Judah Friedlander.

A Maryland native, Tully said he was inspired to write this movie based on his many summers vacationing with family in Ocean City.

He called it "a formulaic 80's movie at heart" that will feature pingpong, 80's culture and several Ocean City landmarks.

"For me, the landmarks are as important a component of the film as the actual characters, is the town of Ocean City and the era. I'm a big believer in the more specific the film is, the more universal it will resonate with viewers. The more true we are to Maryland and Ocean City, the better it'll play."

---------

At least it sounds like they are working hard to give the movie a true 80's feel.

So would you let them borrow some of your prized 80's possession for a chance for them to be immortalized on film?

I would let them buy some of our pinball games, but not borrow. I know what kind of abuse props take.

Pittsburghgirl. What pinball machines do you have? Pinball is more enjoyable than the other arcade games, not that i dont like the other games, pinball just rox!

As far as Ping Pong Summer goes. It was on twice on a free movie channel we got over the weekend. I was unable to see most of it, just caught the end which had quite a few arcade games during the ping pong match.
Has anyone else seen it?

Terd,, I can't remember most of them, they are in storage, but one was Eight Ball Deluxe. I'd love to find a Guns n Roses pinball machine.

Glad I discovered this thread - I wasn't aware of "Ping Pong Summer" before seeing this. I will definitely check out the film.

I grew up in the Baltimore, Maryland area and was a teen in the '80's; I also remember going to Ocean City in the summer as a kid. So, I'm sure I will like this.

Finally saw "Pink Pong Summer" recently. Decent '80's nostalgia film, and brought back memories of going to the beach as a kid, '80's music, big boom boxes, first crushes, and eating a lot of candy [Wink]

I was amused by the "Funk Punch" that one of the characters drank, with all of the extreme amounts of sugar (including "pixie sticks") - LOL.

The movie definitely had an independent feel/vibe to it, which I'm sure was intentional.

Susan Sarandon was great, as was the rest of the cast - the younger actors were somewhat amateurish, but that just added to the realism of the film.
