Here was a truly entertaining movie. Clever writing and two great performances by Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld. Good story telling by the Coen Brothers. It delivered a few hearty laughs. I always appreciate that in a movie.

Anyone else seen this?

This is the one with John Wayne right? [Wink]

I will definitely watch this new version when it comes to Starz.. it has a great cast! I've seen the original many times and John Wayne won an Oscar, but my fav Wayne flicks are "The Searchers", "Chisum", "The Sons of Katie Elder" and then probably "Rio Bravo".

Isn't the plot the same as the original? How can the Coen Brothers say that they wrote it?

"Written for the screen" - it might mean they went to the source material (maybe a book) and adapted it from that.

This was still at our theatre after all...went to see it with a buddy last week. I've always loved Westerns and am often critical of modern attempts to capture the old west magic. I enjoyed this flick (for some reason missed the original so cannot offer comparison)...great scenery, good acting. The one thing that bothered me most, which I'll admitt in advance is very picky, is the western drawl in some of the non lead characters...it seemed like a bunch of actors trying to do a John Wayne impersonation...."well there sonny, you best get yer self over to the saloon...."....a bit overdone.

Haven't seen it yet, but from what I understand, the Coen Brothers wanted to make their version more closer to the spirit of Charles Portis' novel, instead of a redo of the John Wayne version.

The Duke abides...

Watched True Grit last night and it was great!
Very good story and awesome cast.

I knew that Bridges, Damon, Brolin and Pepper can act but what about Hailee Steinfeld?
Damn, she was sensational!

This movie did surprisingly well at the Box Office,
Budget:$38,000,000 Gross:$244,900,000 (Worldwide)

I don´t remember ever seeing the Wayne version.

I thought Hailee Steinfeld did an excellent job in the movie. There were some really funny moments that I loved, and overall the movie was good. But it fell off a bit, at the end...at least for me.

I pretty much agree with your review Ronnie. I really enjoyed this movie and it made me smile quite a few times. I want to watch it again because I feel I may have missed a few things. I do agree that the very end felt a little off. It almost felt like it was rushed maybe??? I'm not quite sure, but overall, very solid.
