Devolution here,

So yeah, The Wonder Years are on Netflix, and nothing says living the 7th - 12th grade again like watching the Wonder Years.

I watched the first 2 episodes and oddly I remember them clear as day. I remember the power of Vietnam pushing the story of how kids grew up in the late 60's.

Winnie and Kevin's first kiss I might have ranked amongst the greatest first kisses of all time, (it was certainly the most innocent, along with the kiss in My Girl) if there was more of a buildup. But there wasn't and it became the premise of how a whole show was going to playout.

I can't wait to watch the famous "Yearbook" episode again, but I'm going to take it one show at a time.

The Wonder Years is a lesson in history, but more importantly it goes through the feelings of what it's like to have a middle class family.

I don't think that everyone will get all of the things that made the show great because if you think about it, there is an episode where they complain that they don't have a color tv. Kids today, while being able to relate to the feelings that all kids have in Junior High, soon enough won't remember what's it's like to have a TV that you can't hang on a wall.

Oh well, on to episode 3. I'll try to review them every couple of episodes if anyone wants to join in.

This just reminded me of The simpsons episode where all of a sudden Bart is getting narrated like Kevin:

"Get a job, were they serious?"

Devolution here,

Now episodes 3-6 we get to know about Kevin's dad and his job (boring), his sister, her hippie boyfriend and the fact that he wasn't exactly sleeping with just her. That brings us to the fifth and sixth episodes, the phone call and the dance, they are both classic told from Kevin's view as a 12 year old looking to call a girl he likes (Lisa Berlini) and not sound stupid, he spends a period passing notes with her and finally calls.

The episode I like though is "The Dance". Kevin is going to his first junior high dance and asks Lisa and she says yes only to be shot down by her after someone else asks too. Thinking Winnie would say yes we find out she is going with Kurt McCray and now the season is moving nicely.

The dance is hilarious and you can honestly see the A) Winnie was upst that Kevin didn't ask her, and Kevin was upset that Winnie has moved on.

Good stuff.

Atomik, this series was just fantastic...i started watching it at a tender age of 13 or 14 so it was great to watch...im not entirely sure you would like it now being an adult but i dnt see why not as it is so well narrated by daniel stern as kevin Arnold.
The moral and ethical and almost certain philisophical nature of the narration is second to none. It is a very original and clever story following the arnolds family dilemas throughout the 60s. Its great to see the characters grow up. Young love is the forever theme although not always at the forefront of each episode. It has all the ingrediants to make you laugh and at times get a little choked up and as Devo said, the first kiss between winnie and Kevin is quite possibly one of the best youll see in a coming of age (ok so its prepubesent)series. Please do your best to watch and give it a chance. I grew up on the beach surfing and skating so american surburbia in which this series is set is a little foreign to me but that doesnt mean i didnt 'get it'...it was a big hit in Australia too. Give it a go, without a doubt my most favourte tv series of all time...i need to try and get it all on dvd as its not airing here at the moment in the uk.

I watched a few episodes when it aired, but was not a faithful watcher. When I got older, started watching re-runs and fell in love with the show. The atmosphere of the show is vintagy good, the use of music is awsome, character developement is great, and ohhhhh, did I mention Olivia d'Abo....OMG....I loves her!!

I've seen many episodes, but no where near in order, so I aim to watch from beginning to end some day. I have all six seasons, and the show happens to be one of my wife's favorites, so not hard to convince her to watch with me.....hmmmmmm....might even start tonight!

Yep...she's the oldest of the three kids....very beautiful throughout the series. I don't know which season, but at one point on the show, Ross from "Friends" is her boyfriend. The show captures the era very nicely, with narration throughout each episode from an older Kevin (the youngest brother)....similar to the narration in A Christmas Story and Stand By Me....try to start from the beginning if you can.

Thanks Cassie. As I recall, in the later seasons, didn't we see less and less of Miss Olivia....a crying shame! Also, as Kevin got older and lost his little boy charm, the show wasn't quite as good.....

Devolution here,

A few more that I watched. Kevin gets involved with a tough trouble maker, Kevin falls head over heels for Miss White, and of course, the great Arnold family Christmas.

The Heart of Darkness a trouble maker (a super young Breckin Meyer) becomes friends with Paul and Kevin mostly becuase Paul and Kevin are mad that Winnie has been hanging out with the popular kids. Breckin brings beer and cigarettes, and scares the two of them in the sewer drain, it's a good episode, but not amazing.

Our Miss White, Kevin shows the crush that he has on his history teacher, which is far better looking than any teacher that I had in Junior High. He gets jealous because his father is talking to her while he is picking him up. It's innocent, but Kevin spends most of the episode mad at his dad. Nothing like being territorial He joins a school play, he reads a part for RFK, it's memorable, but only because I'm a teacher.

I love the Christmas episode, all about the quest for a possible color TV. I recommend that everyone should watch it because it gives perspective on what it was like to be broke in the 1960's. I remember having a black and white TV when I was younger, man, no one even has tubes anymore. (Thank GOD)

Until the next 3.

I watched this show on & off growing up.

Well, that is until Madeline entered the scene...then I watched it all the time!

*Madeline....Drooooool***

Yeah, I had the same reaction as Kevin in this scene..Why Kev never hooked up with this babe still puzzles me [Confused] ...Even after Winnie Dumps him, he had the perfect opportunity and he Blew it. Kevin was a moron sometimes!

This just also happens to be around the time when the show was at it's funniest, IMO.

I always thought it was Daniel Stern narrating it but never knew for sure until I just looked it up.

Devolution here,

So we got 4 more episodes down,

I'd like to start with the beginning of the Becky Slater.

The Becky Slater first two episodes start Danica McKeller's sister Crystal as Becky. Becky is a great character, caught in the whirlwind that is the Kirk McCray, Winnie Cooper and Kevin Arnold love triangle. Kevin, looking to make Winnie jealous, decides to ask her out to go "Steady". By the end of the episode, they break up and get back together, but by the next episode (A personal favorite) they fully break up. I laughed because the second Becky Slater episode is the "Kevbo, Ericbo, Paulbo" episode as well as the important "Do you like him? Or do you like him like him?" part. Growing up I remembered loving this episode mostly because I wished that I had the guts to talk to girls as openly as Kevin did, even though it rarely worked out for him.

The next two episode were "Character builder episodes" The first one where Mrs. Arnold takes the pottery class and fights with her husband for the first time in front of the kids, was touching, kind of like the realization that parents can fight and sometimes you worry that fights will tear apart a family.

The last episode that I watched was the Piano episode where Kevin takes piano lessons, more of a "I wish I would have stuck it out" moral. Not the best episode, eh.

Until next time,

WE are DEVO
