i was wondering if you rewinders could help me? i am trying to get some songs together for a friend, who wants songs by Prince and the people he collaborated with and had the same sound as he did in the 80s. i love those drum triggered beats he had.
example: vanity: nasty girl - what a terrific song.
i was thinking of jesse johnson's be your man as well.

can you guys recommend more please?

"Everybody Dance" TaMara & The Seen (produced by Jesse Johnson)

Any song by The Time (which Prince worked with under the name of Maurice Starr), or The Time's solo members efforts (Morris Day, etc.).

The Human League worked with Flyte Tyme Productions in the mid-80's, as did Janet Jackson.

The Family.

The Detroit group Ready For The World never worked with Prince, but they did sound a lot like him!

I always enjoyed Jesse Johnson's "Get To Know Ya". Also, Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl" is a classic as well. Everyone loves Sheila E.

NowhereGirl, when it comes right down to it, just go with old Prince like the tune "Controversy" and dirty Prince like "Erotic City".

Hey nowheregirl,

He also worked with the Dutch girls band Loïs Lane and Taja Sevelle.
I think his sound (especially the one you are looking for) was at it's best when he was still working with the Revolution.

Valley's right about Erotic City. That is an awesome song has a great beat. AND.. it has Sheila E in it. Same goes for: Raspberry Beret, The Beautiful Ones, When Doves cry (my favorite), She's Always in My Hair and 17 Days. They all have that triggered drum beat you talked about.

The problem with Prince is, there's just too many good songs to choose from. Good luck!

Yes, he did. He wrote the song under a different name: Christopher. Prince originally recorded the song as a duet with Apollonia 6, but rejected the song at the last minute.

The song was later covered by Relient K, Missile Innovation, and Bonnie Pink.

The purple rain album is my favorite.

"Darling Nikki"

"When Doves Cry"

"I Would Die 4 U"

"The Beautiful Ones"

"Purple Rain"

And more..

I just instantly loved that album, and also to this day.IMO a true master piece.Purple rain was more mainstream and easy to get/like i think. But i really loved the whole album a lot. This album is on my top 10 list any day [Cool]

Cheers
