Although it's hard because there ares so many, what are the best 80's metal albums in your opinion? I think mine are:

To Live and Die In LA was a very underrated 80s movie in my opinion. I love the song Wang Chung did for the movie. They still play it regularly here on the all 80s radio station...

Some good choices so far - and "Master of Puppets", "Powerslave" and "Operation Mindcrime" would certainly make my list too.
I'll add a few more (in no particular order)
King's X - "Out of The Silent Planet" Rush - "Grace Under Pressure" Demon - "The Plague" Mercyful Fate - "Don't Break The Oath" Celtic Frost - "To Mega Therion" Blue Oyster Cult - "The Revolution By Night" Dio - "Holy Diver"

Speaking as someone who's fave band of all time happens to be Iron Maiden, I can honestly say I've never heard a more consistantly excellent - or heavy - album from them than their Somewhere In Time from '86. Truly awesome songwriting and production (tracks like Wasted Years, Sea Of Madness, and Stranger In A Strange Land just take the breath away they're so good). Killers is without doubt an exceptional album also, but that has more of a late 70's feel to it IMO; S.I.T. is truly EIGHTIES-sounding with its 'metallic' guitars and ultra-slick production. It was only ever really going to go downhill for them (very gradually) from here.
Others worthy of mention:
Slayer - South Of Heaven: Prefer this to Reign In Blood as it goes (not that there's much to choose). Truly the trash metal Gods at their peak; especially like the songs Mandatory Suicide and Spill The Blood, amazing riffing.
Nirvana - Bleach: Far, far superior to their 90's albums IMO. Heavier, dirtier sound to it than likes of Nevermind, but with no lack of songwriting merit. About A Girl and Love Buzz being standouts.
Ditto Appetite For Destruction btw (despite the fact I think Use Your Illusion II kicks its a*ss).

Number of The Beast and Seventh Son both totally **** all over Somewhere In Time. This was one of Maiden's worst during the classic lineup period...

Hear what you're saying Noms, and I agree that Number.. and Seventh.. are the 2 everyone cites as Maiden at their best, whilst ignoring Somewhere.., but, sorry... I just don't buy it.
Let me clarify, I love both those albums, bona-fide classics (hell, they're ALL classics, come on!! ), but it's just that I hear something in Somewhere.. I'm not hearing in the other 2, difficult putting my finger on what exactly, an extra dimension whatever it might be. Perhaps the added length/complexity of songwriting?? But it's something special IMO.
Not the only one who thinks this; my best mate, another lifelong Maiden fan, also cites SIT as a big fave, behind only NOTB in his estimation. Competent guitarist, the most oft-jammed riffs I hear from him being Caught Somewhere In Time, Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner and Deja Vu (along with Trooper & Afraid To Shoot Strangers, God he worships those!).
Seriously, if I were to compile a desert island Top 10 with only one album per artist/group, it would be extremely close between Somewhere.. and Killers for the cut. Fair enough m8e we disagree on this, but one thing I'm sure we'd both agree on is that, this band was truly a one-off. Very much doubt we'll see their likes again in our lifetimes. Ever.
(And that's an extremely depressing thought :-((

Great List Duckie but I must respectfully disagree on one. Being a HUGE RUSH fan, Grace Under Pressure is not a metal album. From the 80s, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures were hard, progressive rock with Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire being more synthesized but still with great guitars and drums (of course).

My favourite Rush albums are from Moving Pictures and earlier. After Moving Pictures they became less rock and more synthesized. But boy they sure could rock for a three piece.

Rush are still an incredible live act. A huge Rush fan friend of mine saw them on the current tour and said they sound as good as ever and give real value for the money by playing for three hours. They did have some cringeworthy music at times in the 90's like Roll the Bones, but they always had the instrumental chops bar none.

Yeah - I accept that, as I guess it could be argued that Rush have not been strictly a 'metal' band since maybe the late 70's. However, I stand by the fact that "Grace...." is still a fantastic, sophisticated ROCK album!

That was I who wrote the quote above. I will agree with you on it being a fantastic, sophisticated ROCK album! I've seen them 4 times, twice on the Vapor Trails tour. They were beyond awesome! I just purchased the R30 DVD. They are working on a new album perhaps out by this fall put probably out in 2007. Can't wait!
