Ok, as for England and New York, the best punk came out of the late 70's. WAhile the Clash ad the Ramones were still around, they weren't making as great music as their first three or four albums, but there were other bands scattered in America and Canada that kept the punk torch burning for a while. Sigh.

"Institutionalized" was one of the best songs of the 80s. It can stand on its' own or blend into a dance mix if put between two songs of similar BPM. It can ease well into Teena Marie's "Square Biz, for example...At least it does for me.

I wouldn't call them one of the "best punk bands" of the 80's, but certainly The Plasmatics with Wendy O. Williams is definitely one of the more well-known punkers back then. They even got to be on the "SCTV" TV show!
Another notorious punker of the time was G.G. Allin.
They both make Billy Idol look like a wimp!

Some great bands already mentioned by Riptide, so I won't go over the same ones he's picked. I would also argue that The Damned were well past there sell by date in the 80's.

Although I love the Damaged album, I prefer the pre Rollins Black Flag material. The later Black Flag stuff was averge to poor.
I also forgot to mention Youth Brigade, their Sound & Fury album is superb.

How could I forget about the Plasmatics? One also could add the Buzzc0cks as one of the best punk bands.

I always thought the Buzzc0cks were in their prime in the 70's. Never listend to the Plasmatics TBH.

Some good picks guys, even though they gave the punk genre kind of a thuggish image, I always liked the Exploited's Troops of Tomorrow album.

Punk got a thuggish image, but I didn't mind that at all. It's a form of rebelious music just like 50's Rock 'N' Roll was.

Subhumans(CAN)are one of those bands that have eluded me thus far, mainly due to how expensive the old vinyl records are these days.
Dag Nasty's debut is superb, as is Uniform Choice's Screaming For Change LP. Haven't heard the GI's output for many years, just picked up the FU's LP Kill For Christ.

The Meatmen were really crude and Un-PC for me, although nothing as bad as GG Allin. You can find an affordable canadian Subhumans CD compilation here, but vinyl is hard to find. GI had some really strong albums particularly You where they sound like a reincarnated Damned, a flipside DVD on them just came out recently.
Naked Raygun and Husker Du had some great albums as well. Crass had some moments too, but they were so eclectic for the time.

That's intresting Riptide, not been pedantic but how then do you justify choosing The Misfits? Who's lyrics are worse than The Meatmens(and not as tounge in cheek)

Ok, the Misfits, they had these gory lyrics about graveyards, monsters, zombies, pure 50's b-horror, but I think their charm was they had the lyrics accompanied by these super catchy, melodic woah woah choruses, so the shock value was almost humour in a sense, I mean instead of I love you, they said I want your skull. The Elvis-like croon seemed to mask the horror lyrics too. The Meatmen were a bit more confrontantional, so were Fear actually, Charged GBH and Expolited had some real crudeness too. Hey, you know what? I have to dig out the Meatmen again, it's been a while. Will get back to you about that.

Riptide have a lsiten to The Misfits tracks Last Caress, Skulls & Bullit to name but three.
I would also recommend UK band The Partisans(Blind Ambition, 17 Years of Hell etc)
