This song use to play on our jukebox in the cafeteria at our high school constantly. I just heard it on the radio this morning. I use to love Human League, I also loved their song Fascination.

But...Don't You Want Me...is such a classic 80's song:

You were working as a waitress in a c0cktail bar
When I met you
I picked you out, I shook you up, and turned you around
Turned you into someone new
Now five years later on you’ve got the world at your feet
Success has been so easy for you
But don’t forget it’s me who put you where you are now
And I can put you back down too

Don’t, don’t you want me?
You know I can’t believe it when I hear that you won’t see me
Don’t, don’t you want me?
You know I don’t believe you when you say that you don’t need me
It’s much too late to find
You think you’ve changed your mind
You’d better change it back or we will both be sorry

Don’t you want me baby? don’t you want me - oh
Don’t you want me baby? don’t you want me - oh

I was working as a waitress in a ****tail bar
That much is true
But even then I knew I’d find a much better place
Either with or without you
The five years we have had have been such good times
I still love you
But now I think it’s time I lived my life on my own
I guess it’s just what I must do

Don’t you want me baby? don’t you want me - oh
Don’t you want me baby? don’t you want me - oh

We all know and love the song (even though I was only born the year it came out), but if I may:

You had a jukebox in your cafeteria? Damn, I envy you. In my youth, all we had was talking to each other.

It was probably for the best that we didn't have a jukebox in our cafeteria. The food was bad enough that I wouldn't want to have it compounded with gangsta rap and soul-numbing alternative schlock.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

Yeah, we had a jukebox in high school, it was awesome, cause every song in it was cool, allthough I swear the same dude got there first and in 9th grade the song "Lola" played a billion times, and "Who Can it Be Now"...was the runner up in most popular song.

The Stroke-Billy Squier ...came in 3rd, and Dirty Laundry-Don Henley was maybe 4th.

We had a blast at lunch, we were allowed to sit with whomever we wanted, and I had great times at lunch...we were allowed to have parties for each others birthdays. My lunch table...we always had a Xmas party...and we would take in pop and doritos and cookies, and all the guys would be begging us for cookies...it was fun.

When I was a sophmore...I had one other girl that sat at my lunch table, and the rest of my "click" was the freshman football team, cause I knew 3 of the guys really well....I grew up with them, and they begged me to sit with them, so I got my friend Kim to be with me...but it wasn't like I had to twist her arm. It was so funny...cause my cousin would come over...just to try and sit next to the one guy I was friends with, but I was suppose to pretend I didn't know she liked him. It was hysterical. That's the stuff I miss about school.

We did have some parties in high school, but they were in class only. The last school Christmas party I had was in 12th grade. I had bought in a copy of "Scrooged" and all of us watched it while having junk food and soda. Even then, I knew about the 80s.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

Scrooged, is one of the movies I am dying to see and never have yet. Can you believe it??

See John, you had some good times in school, it wasn't all bad. Which is a good thing. [Cool]

I know I had some good times in school, but it's just so difficult to remember them. It often seems like all you remember is the pain.

Still, I did start to learn more about the 80s. I was into collecting cassettes at the time, so I had a small duffel bag full of 80s music cassettes that I lugged to school every day along with my regular book bag. That was fun.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

I just was going through my attic, and found a bunch of 80's cassettes. I am going to try and play some of them here when I get a chance and see if they held up.

I found Milli Vanilli-I didn't even know I had it... me and Muffy were all excited when we heard Baby, Don't forget my number, on the radio.

I have Paula Abdul's "Promise of a New Day"..I always loved that song.

New Kids on the Block -"Covergirl".

Heart- "There's the girl"

and a bunch more....

does anyone remember the song " Sincerely Yours"? I can't remember who sings it, it was a girl group.

I remember watching the video for it in a hotel room, in 1988...I think it was on Friday Night Videos... it was a cool video...I meet my friend Eddie that night, and we were all hanging at his hotel room watching videos.

I'd like to find that song again too.

"Sincerely Yours" was done by Sweet Sensation.

I don't know if it was an 80s or 90s song, but I do know she performed it. I'm a major mark for freestyle music, so you might find it on one of those compilations.

As a matter of fact, an aide I had in high school was actually the sister of an early-90s freestyle singer named Laura Enea. I had actually met Enea briefly when I went out to hand her some school papers (She had become a teacher). I had no idea I was chatting with a freestyle singer until my teacher told me.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

This discussion has run astray from the Human League, hasn't it?

Thanks for giving me the name of that group...I had a vague recollection of the name.

Back on topic.. [Wink]

'Don’t You Want Me' is a good song. But I like about everything they did in the 80’s. (Not sure if they still make music?)
One of my favorites by them is 'Being Boiled'. Even though it’s so different from the rest of their stuff, that track is awesome!!! [Cool]

'Don't... don't you want me...'

I still love the downbeatness of this lyric. With that dejected tone he sings it in punctuated by the dirgelike synth it sounds like the whole world has just fallen out from under him. It was a great commiseration song for those bad old days when you didn't feel particularly wanted.

'I Can't Stand Still' by Don Henley is another good one like that.

The song is so cool because it gave the male and female perspective in the same song. It deserved to put synth pop at the forefront after topping the charts. I like early Human League like being Boiled and the Dark hit of space too. In fact I just bought this DVD called made in Sheffield, that talks about all the bands that came from there like ABC, Cabaret Voltaire, Heaven 17 and Human League. The song is pretty down beat, but I think the most downbeat was 84's Louise. Oakey sounds pretty dejected in it.

Human League tried a comeback in the early 90s with a song called 'Tell Me When'. I still have to listen to it just for the voices. Great song, but no 'Human' or 'Dont You Want Me'. BTW--did anyone as a kid get the Human League and Simple Minds confused? I think it was the "Dont you Want Me' vs the 'Dont You Forget About Me' thing

Human League released a comeback album a few years ago called Secrets. It was pretty decent songwise and production wise. Probably their best effort sonce the early 80's. They also had a crisp video for the catchy single all I ever wanted. I really wish they would play here, but all I see them doing is European tours right now.
