I just saw a commercial for Value City and they were using the song "We got the Beat", only they were singing "We got the V".....

and I saw a Toyota commercial that used the song: "If this is it".

It is because they can't find any new songs that actually would sound good promoting their product.

Isis:

There's another reason: people who grew up in the 80's are now in the advertising world.

One of the stupidest ones is Billy Idol's song "Rebel Yell" (the More, More, More part) for Blockbuster Video. Do these advertising execs even listen to the lyrics to figure out what the song is actually about. Another lame one was using Rick James' song "Give It To Me" (a song totally about sex) for Burger King's Whopper.

Well, when you think about it: "Give It To Me" and the word: "Whopper", there's a sexual connotation that works!

The worst and lamest example of how an 80's song is ruined in commercials is the use of Devo's song early 80's song "Beautiful World", which was used in a series of commercials for Target stores. The ad agency must have totally forgot about the ironic meaning behind that song!

Another bad example is the song "Melt With You" which was later used in a Burger King commercial, for their cheeseburgers.

I was going to mention "I Melt With You" and Burger King.

Many years ago I ranted about that on Chuck Grosvenor's inthe80s.com, which was the website that started me on my 80s path.

In one section, I noted that the song is about "making love as atomic bombs drop, not about the cheese that you put on your burgers".

I could think of plenty of examples of inappropriate song usage, but I won't bore you.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff

The movie Sky High that is out uses a lot of remakes from 80's songs. P.S. my kids liked it
