In 1985, Dino De Laurentiis was trying to get Total Recall off the ground. Needing a financial boost, he decided to make a quick, low-budget action flick. He picked a screenplay he liked about gangsters and -- bingo! -- Raw Deal was born.

Review

RAW DEAL is one of the lesser-known Arnold Schwarzenegger flicks. He stars as small-town sheriff Mark Kaminsky, who used to be a hotshot Chicago agent working for the FBI, fired for insubordination.

This situation complicates his marriage to his wife (Blanche Baker), but when the son of FBI chief Harry Shannon (Darren McGavin) is murdered, Kaminsky is called to get Patrovita (Sam Wanamaker), the mob boss who is the main suspect in the murder.

To complete the job, Kaminsky goes undercover as mobster Joseph P. Brennar to keep an eye on Patrovita's gang. If Kaminsky completes the job, he will be given possible reinstatement.

During his mission, Kaminsky meets Monique (Kathryn Harrold), a female gambler who is in debt with the mob. The two are romantically involved and even sleep together, as Kaminsky protects her from the mob.

With help from Monique, Kaminsky gets the information he needs to wipe out the entire Chicago mob.

Verdict

This independent film was a box-office disappointment for Arnold Schwarzenegger, but it did little to ruin his film career. The following year, he would go on to star in the blockbuster Predator.

Alas, Schwarzenegger is pretty good here, although some of the action scenes are a little cheesy.

Good to watch on a Saturday afternoon, plus it's got Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Some of the action scenes and the violence are somewhat bizarre.
